The Dion Switzerville Red Barn Snowshoe Race was held today under ideal snowshoe racing conditions. The ‘Red Barn’ is the traditional end of the snowshoe racing season, and a celebration of a great year of snowshoe racing. Hanging out around the campfire, eating soup, drinking gourmet coffee and sharing tales from the trails (including numerous deer sightings) doesn’t get any better.
The 5.6km course was a great mix of fast groomed sections, technical single track, challenging hills (with a rope assisted hill), and a tricky water crossing. It was inspiring seeing everyone out running so well and enjoying the day.
Charley Murphy of Toronto (formerly of Switzerville) capped off a great series with a strong win in a time of 26:40. Mark Williams of Lancaster finished second in 28:26, with Graham Ross of Merrickville finished third in 28:53. Erin McDougall of Brighton was the top male master in a time of 28:56.
Emma Saaltink of Cornwall also continued her string of first place finishes by winning in a time of 32:05. Deborah Berry of Kingston finished second in 33:34, and Sara Montgomery of Yarker finished third in 33:42. Jenn Ross of Merrickville was the top female master in a time of 40:09.
Charley Murphy (3 series race wins) and Emma Saaltink (4 series race wins) were crowned as series champions in the Dion Eastern Ontario Snowshoe Running Series. Murphy and Saaltink each won a pair of top of the line Dion Racing Snowshoes for their series wins. Two other lucky winners were also randomly awarded Dion Snowshoes.
Congratulations and thank you to everyone who took part in the series. We look forward to seeing you all again next season.
