Good snow conditions and springlike weather greeted racers at the Dion Ganaraska Forest Snowshoe Race held near Port Hope today. The weather certainly played a huge role in allowing everyone to have a wonderful day. Members of the Durham Triathlon Club and Whitby and Oshawa Running Room brought a large number of participants and demonstrated a festive atmosphere with many wearing tutu’s as their snowshoe racing attire.
Peter Millican of Madoc was the first male runner to finish the challenging 8km course in a time of 46:27. Robert Jackson of Brighton finished second in 52:17, followed by Mark Gibson of Whitby in third in 53:19. Greg Dunn of Ajax was the first male master in a time of 62:41.
Rebecca Turner of Brighton was the winner of the woman’s race in a fast time of 51:55. Olivia Patton of Brighton finished second in 55:22, followed by Marcia Coelho of Toronto in third in 56:18. Christine Byrd of Wooler was the top female master in a time of 64:69.

The next race in the Dion Ontario Snowshoe Running Series will be the Dion Red Barn Snowshoe Race on March 4th near Napanee, ON. The Red Barn race will also serve as the Dion Ontario Snowshoe Running Championships race, with trophies being awarded to race winners.
With this also being the final race in the series, the Dion Ontario Snowshoe Running Series Champions will also be crowned. Racers will have their 3 best races in the series count towards the series standings and champions will be awarded a series trophy as well as a new pair of Dion racing snowshoes.
