Trouble in the Hen House

The last 6 weeks have been quite the challenge training wise for me. I felt like I was getting in decent shape in April and looking forward to racing, when I got nailed with a couple of fluke injuries. A few weeks before planning to run Bear Mountain 50miler, I was out route planning and scouting … [Read more...]

Spring, URG and Jelly Donuts

Upon returning to our car, we found a personalized URG comic on our dirty back window

Well, spring is here. At least in Eastern Ontario. Hard to believe that the winter that wasn’t is now behind us. Sure, I expect that we’ll have a few flurries in the forecast over the next month or so, but I can’t imagine getting anything substantial that will stick. Even with the warm … [Read more...]

Yukon Arctic Ultra 100 Training

One of the first pulk runs of the season. Felt so good to get rid of the tire.

It’s been a while since I’ve posted about my preparations for the Yukon Arctic Ultra 100 mile. Truth is, between training and work, I haven’t had much of a chance to update. With today being a recovery day, I’m sitting here with my feet up after a very solid training day on Sunday that … [Read more...]

Yukon Training and Gear Update

yukonarctic_2011_500

Two months from today I leave for Whitehorse for the Yukon Arctic Ultra 100 miler. While the weather in Eastern Ontario hasn’t exactly been northernly lately, I do feel as though training has gone well this past month and I’m getting some pretty specific training in for the race. We only have … [Read more...]

October Training Update

Fall trail running

October was a tough month of training for me. I fully expected that training would take a bit of a hit with the Sydenham Fall Trail Run happening mid-month and with how busy things get for that. I didn’t expect what would floor me after that though. Healthwise, I haven’t felt myself since … [Read more...]

September Training Update

Fun in the Gats

September wasn’t a great month for me. It seems so long ago since we got back from Colorado and the GORE-TEX TransRockies Run. I was pretty much sick after that until Haliburton, and then pulled the plug early there. For the past two weeks I’ve begun to ramp my training back up again and … [Read more...]

July Gourmet Sandwich

I've been spending quite a few hours training at beautiful and rugged Could Lake

I never did get around to doing a training recap of July. Basically, July ended up being somewhat of a $hit sandwich. Crap at the top of the month, some great training for the bulk of the middle of the month, than a bit more crap at the bottom of the month. $hit sandwich (though my definition is … [Read more...]

June Training Update

I'm planning to add more tire pulling runs to my training for Transrockies. We don't have any really long hills or mountains close by, so this makes a good substitute.

In general, I was pretty pleased with training in June. I had some great long runs, good quality, consistently good daily volume, decent/adequate recovery, and managed any minor nigglies that popped up very well. In short, I was feeling very positive about going into Finger Lakes 50 miler as well … [Read more...]

May Training Update

GORE-TEX-TransRockiesRun

May was a really solid month of training for me and has me pumped going into the summer. My daily average run got up to the highest it's been in quite a while to just a shade under 2 hours per day. My body has felt very comfortable running this as it has been a gradual buildup with recovery weeks … [Read more...]

April Training Update

Off Season Snowshoe Running Fun

April ended up being a pretty good training month for me. I felt like I got back into a decent place and certainly would have run a lot more in training if it hadn't been for a short taper for the Seaton Trail 52km, as well as recovering from the race. I'm feeling pretty solid now and getting … [Read more...]
