Race Report: Dion Ignite the Night Snowshoe Race – January 11, 2025
The 2025 Dion Canadian Snowshoe Series kicked off in style last night with the Dion Ignite the Night Snowshoe Race. Held amidst the enchanting lights of Upper Canada Village's Alight at Night Festival, this nighttime event provided a magical backdrop for racers. The course conditions were exceptional, thanks to a week of fresh snowfall leading up to the event.
10 KM SERIES RACE RESULTS
The highly competitive 10 km race marked the first opportunity for athletes to earn points in the Dion Canadian Snowshoe Series.
Men's Race:
🥇 Bernie Hogan (Bancroft) secured first place with an impressive time of 42:49.
🥈 Charley Murphy (Toronto) followed in 43:41, taking second place.
🥉 Hugo Duguay-Boucher (Ottawa) rounded out the podium with a time of 46:35.
Top Male Master: David Kania (Freeville, NY) led the 40+ category, finishing in 50:18.
Women's Race:
🥇 Susan Durrell (Ottawa) claimed victory, crossing the line in 55:25.
🥈 Elizabeth Nurse (Cornwall) took second in 57:12.
🥉 Yvonne Mery (Ottawa) finished third in 61:01.
Top Female Master: Jill Trower (Ottawa) topped the 40+ category with a time of 61:46.
5 KM NON-SERIES RACE RESULTS
A 5 km race was also held for non-series participants, featuring an equally thrilling competition.
Men's Race:
🥇 Geoff Richards (Cobourg) was first across the finish line in a time of 23:55.
🥈 Evan Raz finished second in 27:10.
🥉 Rick Balderson (Nepean) secured third in 29:56.
Top Male Master: Joe Albert (Lac Des Loup) finished first in the 40+ category with a time of 32:11.
Women's Race:
🥇 Heather Lewis (Ottawa) won the women’s division with a time of 32:33.
🥈 Deanna Rothwell (Ottawa) came in just behind at 32:40.
🥉 Chloe Freund (Paul Smiths, NY) finished third in 34:28.
Top Female Master: Joan McCuaig (Newington) led the 40+ women with a time of 34:34.
